A region full of contrasts and surprises

The region, which is sickle-shaped, situated around the golf of Genua, with its sumptuous Mediterranean vegetation, the slim, main rocky coastal area and its picturesque small villages and the mountainous, green hinterland offers a programme full of contrasts for tourists from all over the world. In only some minutes you get out of the coast, overgrown with palms, olive trees and vines into dense woods with pine- and deciduous trees.

Enjoy the walk along the coast of the Cinque Terre – five villages that are situated at the rocks that rise up vertically out of the sea. In ancient times, these villages could only be reached with a boat or along narrow paths. Only about an hour by car away from Genua, there’s a wonderful path along the cliffs from village to village.

Genua - native country of many seafarers and besides the most important harbour of Italy – is the European cultural capital in 2004. Come and see the picturesque old part of town, built in the 12th century, stroll through the “Caruggi”, the narrow harbour- lanes, in which there’s most “life” and visit the Acquario di Genova, the biggest water-zoo of Europe, which will enthusiasm Young and Old. Art-enthusiasts are astonished at the mighty palaces, great paintings and rich museums. In this city, Rubens, Van Dyck, Cambiaso… have definitely left a mark.

Fish, chick-peas, basil, first-class olive oil and delicious wines are the most important ingredients of a typical meal in Liguria. Enjoy the “Trenette al pesto”, vegetable-soups, a “Focaccia”, or sardines and finish a day of your journey in this way.
